The Best Sleeping Bag For Cold Weather 2020:
Sleeping Bag For Cold Weather Reviews
TETON Sports LEEF Lightweight Mummy Sleeping Bag
To properly kick off this search for the best sleeping bag for cold weather, we are looking at a sleeping bag from a brand that should always appear on any list looking for the best tents, sleeping bags, hiking gear, or camping gear, which is TETON.
They have been a leader in producing high-quality outdoor gear for years, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone who is familiar with them to see that one of their products is being reviewed on our list.
The TETON Sports LEEF Lightweight Mummy Sleeping Bag is a great option for hiking because, as you can see from the product name, this sleeping bag is both lightweight and capable of protecting you from extremely cold weather.
Given that the topic of this article is the best sleeping bag for cold weather, we think that the best way to start off this review is by talking about how the TETON Sports LEEF Lightweight Mummy Sleeping Bag does when it comes to dealing with cold weather.
Obviously, it does very well, given that it is on this list in the first place, but why does it do well? There are a few reasons why this TETON sleeping bag provides good protection from the cold. The first thing to note is its shape.
If you aren’t already aware of the different kinds of sleeping bags, then we suggest scrolling down to our buying guide to see an in-depth explanation on the different kinds and what advantages each kind brings to the table.
For the moment, we will say that mummy-style sleeping bags sacrifice space for warmth. They keep you really bottled up (hence the name, since you feel almost like a mummy), which helps to prevent the loss of your natural body heat. Obviously, this comes at the loss of some mobility, so if you are the type who needs to be able to move your feet when sleeping, then this might not be the option for you.
Secondly, the TETON Sports LEEF Lightweight Mummy Sleeping Bag is made with some really high-grade fabric that does a great job of preventing cold air from getting into the sleeping bag and that prevents hot air from escaping.
Because of its shape and this high-grade material, the TETON is actually capable of being used safely in temperatures as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition to its role in keeping you warm, the material is also very tough and durable, which helps to keep the sleeping bag in good condition. The TETON should be a staple of your hikes for a very long time.
Before moving on, we also want to note that because of its shape, the TETON Sports LEEF Lightweight Mummy Sleeping Bag is an especially good option for hiking because you can very easily fold up the bag. When folded, it will take up less space than either a half-mummy bag or a rectangular bag would.
- Mummy-style sleeping bag helps you to preserve body heat.
- Easy to fold up and store.
- Great for hiking.
- Rated for use in temperatures as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Built to last for a long time.
- Not a good option for those who need room to move around.
Browning Camping McKinley -30 Degree Sleeping Bag
For the next review on our list searching for the best sleeping bag for cold weather, we are going to be taking a look at the Browning Camping McKinley -30 Degree Sleeping Bag. This is a pricey sleeping bag to be sure, but if you don’t mind the steep price, then you are going to be getting one of the best, if not the best, cold weather sleeping bags on our list.
As you can see from the name of the sleeping bag, this provides an extreme amount of protection against the cold. Much like the TETON sleeping bag that we just finished reviewing, the Browning Camping McKinley -30 Degree Sleeping Bag is also a mummy-style sleeping bag. As we said in that review, mummy sleeping bags are great for cold weather sleeping since they encourage the retention of body heat.
Also much like the TETON, the Browning Camping McKinley -30 Degree Sleeping Bag is made from really strong, insulated material. When combined with the overall style of the sleeping bag, the Browning Camping is capable of providing protection in temperatures as low as -30 degrees.
This obviously makes it a great option for winter camping as you will be protected from the elements, regardless of how cold it gets.
If you are the type who gets uncomfortable when trying to sleep in a constricting bed, then you may enjoy the Browning Camping McKinley -30 Degree Sleeping Bag more than your average mummy-style sleeping bag because this does offer a bit more space for you to toss and turn when asleep. So, you won’t feel as “constrained” when trying to sleep.
Now, this is an expensive sleeping bag to be sure. At $100+, it certainly isn’t a small investment. However, if you truly want to be protected from the cold on your hiking trip, then it is hard to think of a better option than the Browning Camping McKinley -30 Degree Sleeping Bag. Very few sleeping bags on the market (or on our best sleeping bag for cold weather list for that matter) can compete with it.
- Designed to not rip or tear easily.
- Provides protection against extremely cold weather (up to -30 degrees).
- Designed to trap heat in.
- Gives you some room to move around.
- Very expensive compared to a lot of other sleeping bags.
Coleman Brazos Cold Weather Sleeping Bag
For the next review on our best sleeping bag for cold weather list, we are going to be taking a look at the Coleman Brazos Cold Weather Sleeping Bag. This was an easy option to include on our list for a few reasons.
First off, we haven’t had a true budget-friendly option yet, and we wanted to make sure to include at least one option on this list that is good for those who are operating on a more restricted budget. Secondly, it is also the first rectangular sleeping bag that we are reviewing on this list, which offers its own set of unique advantages.
Let’s first start off by looking at the overall cost of this sleeping bag. Coleman does have something of a reputation for producing relatively affordable sleeping bag options; the Coleman Brazos Cold Weather Sleeping Bag is one such option.
This is by far the most affordable sleeping bag that we have reviewed so far on this list. At under $40, it is the perfect option for those who want a good sleeping bag, while still maintaining their budget.
What really impresses us about the Coleman Brazos Cold Weather Sleeping Bag is that, despite its low price, it is still a relatively well-made sleeping bag. You would expect such an affordable option to be prone to ripping or tearing, but that really isn’t the case with the Coleman.
Something else that we want to address, since this is the first rectangular sleeping bag to appear on this list, is what benefits that brings to the table. When compared to mummy-style sleeping bags, rectangular sleeping bags like the Coleman offer you a lot more room to toss and turn when sleeping. On the other hand, the extra space does lead to some heat loss, which obviously makes these sleeping bags a bit less effective against the cold.
However, don’t get us wrong, the Coleman Brazos Cold Weather Sleeping Bag is still a very effective and well-made cold weather sleeping bag. In fact, it can be used in temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit. While that isn’t quite as good as some of the other sleeping bags that we have mentioned, given the cost and other advantages of the Coleman Brazos, some downsides are to be expected.
- Most affordable sleeping bag that we have reviewed so far.
- Offers more room to toss and turn when sleeping.
- Great insulation to help keep warmth in and cold air out.
- Despite low cost, bag is built to last.
- Does take up more space than a mummy sleeping bag.
- Not as effective against cold weather as some other options.
Coleman 0°F Mummy Sleeping Bag for Big and Tall Adults
For the next product review, we have something that is a bit unique. The Coleman 0°F Mummy Sleeping Bag for Big and Tall Adults is, as you can clearly see from the name, not your average sleeping bag.
This sleeping bag fulfills a specific niche that we haven’t seen any other product fill on our best sleeping bag for cold weather list, which is appealing to those who struggle to fit into a regular-sized sleeping bag.
That is really the amin purpose behind the Coleman 0°F Mummy Sleeping Bag for Big and Tall Adults. It is specifically marketed to individuals who are taller and heavier than average, which means that they would struggle to fit comfortably into one of the regular-sized sleeping bags that we have reviewed on the list.
There isn’t a lot else to mention outside of that. We have already reviewed one sleeping bag from Coleman on this list and we liked it quite a lot. A lot of the same positives that applied to the first Coleman sleeping bag that we reviewed also apply to the Coleman 0°F Mummy Sleeping Bag for Big and Tall Adults. It is a well-made sleeping bag that you can trust to last you for a fairly long time.
- Great option for taller or larger adults, especially men.
- Uses high-quality fabric.
- Not great for smaller adults.
TETON Sports Celsius XXL Sleeping Bag
For the final review on our best sleeping bag for cold weather list, we are going to be doing a review of the TETON Sports Celsius XXL Sleeping Bag.
Now, those of you who have been diligently following along with our review list will recognize the name TETON, since we already reviewed one sleeping bag from them way back at the start of our list. The TETON Sports Celsius XXL Sleeping Bag is another great entry from them and it is definitely deserving of a separate review on our list.
There are a few key differences between the two TETON sleeping bags. Probably the biggest change is the shape and style of each sleeping bag. The first TETON bag that we reviewed was a full mummy-style sleeping bag. The TETON Sports Celsius XXL Sleeping Bag is a half-mummy or semi-rectangular sleeping bag.
As we have said in another review of this style of sleeping bag (and as we will say again in our buying guide), this style of sleeping bag is very useful if you hate the idea of being really cramped in a mummy-style sleeping bag, but you also still want some heat retention.
Of course, given that this is a TETON sleeping bag, you can rest easy knowing that it is very well-made and reliable. This sleeping bag isn’t going to rip or tear on you and it should be a staple of your camping trips for years and years to come. It is also quite moderately priced, especially when you consider the overall quality of the sleeping bag.
- Half-mummy sleeping bag.
- Comes with that signature TETON durability.
- Very useful in cold weather.
- Very moderately priced, given how well-made the bag is.
- Big and bulky; could be hard to take on long hiking trip.
Sleeping Bag Buying Guide
A few times during the course of our best sleeping bag for cold weather review list we mentioned that we would be doing a buying guide to help explain some of the things that we talked about in the article.
That is what this section is going to be dedicated to. In this buying guide, we will talk about different styles of sleeping bag and how to tell the difference between a good sleeping bag and a not so good sleeping bag.
The Different Styles of Sleeping Bag
The absolute first thing that we need to cover in this buying guide is the different kinds of sleeping bags that exist out there. This is of crucial importance since different sleeping bag styles have different advantages and work differently in cold weather. For reference, the three styles of sleeping bag that we looked at were mummy, half-mummy, and rectangular.
Mummy Sleeping Bags
Mummy sleeping bags are probably the most recognizable kind of sleeping bag. They are shaped like mummy sarcophagi, which is what gives them their name. They are probably the best kind of sleeping bag for this particular list because they do two things very well.
First off, because they leave so little space unfilled, your body heat has less places to go, which helps to keep you warmer. Secondly, because this review list is primarily geared towards hikers, mummy sleeping bags take on an extra layer of usefulness since they are noted for being very easy to roll up and to store away. This obviously makes them very useful for hiking trips where storage space is at a premium.
Rectangular Sleeping Bags
Rectangular sleeping bags are basically the exact opposite of mummy sleeping bags. Whereas mummy sleeping bags leave little extra space, rectangular sleeping bags have a ton of extra space. This obviously disperses your body heat, which reduces their efficiency in cold weather. However, some may still prefer rectangular sleeping bags since some struggle to sleep when they feel “constrained.”
Finally, as a half-measure, there are half-mummy (or semi-rectangular as some call them) sleeping bags. As you might guess, they form a halfway point between the two extreme styles of sleeping bag. They have some of the upsides of each kind of sleeping bag, as well as some of the downsides.
Personally, we would recommend just going with one or the other, but we wanted to mention half-mummy sleeping bags as well, just in case it interested you.
