Garmin GPSMAP 64st Hiking GPS Review 2021

GPS receivers are often bulky and unsightly. Not the Garmin GPSMAP 64st. The device from Garmin is a specialized version of the GPSMAP 64. Garmin claims “you can count on GPSMAP 64st”. Whether we can or we can’t depend on how it performs in real life.

Features of the Garmin GPSMAP 64st Hiking GPS

Garmin GPSMAP 64st is expertly crafted. It looks sleek and adopts a practical approach to design. The sturdy polycarbonate body is small and adequately thin making the device easier to carry around. This durability is further enhanced through the inclusion of an IPX7 waterproofing. So your Garmin GPSMAP can survive underwater.

Taking up a considerable portion of this durable body is a 2.6” sunlight-readable color screen. Having a color screen makes this device easy to operate and use. Maps and other relevant information looks rich and detailed on this display. The screen is what makes the GPSMAP 64st, the GPSMAP 64th.

GPSMAP 64st comes preloaded with a variety of maps. There is a worldwide base map with shaded relief. It also features a TOPO 100K, which includes full coverage of the entire US including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.

Aside from these maps, there are also 250,000 preloaded geocaches. And if you want to include a geocache which is not preloaded, you can add the GPX file directly to GPSMAP 64st. No need to do a manual entry of coordinates and fiddle around with paper maps.

Navigating these preloaded maps is also relatively easy thanks to the built-in 3-axis compass which features tilt compensation. As a result, you can use the compass while standing still and it will still give you accurate directions. There is also a sensitive Barometric altimeter responsible for measuring the atmospheric pressure which can indicate weather shifts.

GPS and GLONASS support enables this device to quickly get your position and lock on it. Once locked on, the quad helix antenna maintains a strong connection in a whole range of scenarios. From lush green forests to deep canyons, this device never loses a signal.

Wireless connectivity with Bluetooth and ANT+ allows you to share waypoints and other data between devices.

GPSMAP 64st can also connect to your phone through smart connect. In that way, you can receive notifications such as emails and messages on your GPSMAP 64th while your phone is in your bag.

As you can already tell, all of these features carry a significant price tag. It costs just under $300.
